Isle of Palms stretches roughly seven miles along the South Carolina coast, and with more than 50 public beach access paths scattered across the island, the spot you choose can make or break your beach day. Some access points sit steps from paid parking lots, restrooms, and restaurants. Others drop you onto a quiet, uncrowded stretch of sand — but with no amenities in sight and street parking that fills up fast on holiday weekends.
Whether you're hauling a cooler and boogie boards with the kids or just looking for a peaceful morning walk, this guide breaks down every section of Isle of Palms so you can pick the right access point before you even leave the house. We've organized the island from southwest to northeast — the same direction our Beach Bums delivery crew drives each morning. If you're still deciding on gear, check out our beach rental pricing to plan your budget.
The southwestern tip of Isle of Palms is where the island begins at Breach Inlet, the narrow tidal channel separating IOP from Sullivan's Island. This end of the beach has a distinctly quieter, more residential feel. You won't find restrooms, showers, or lifeguards here, but you will find some of the most peaceful stretches of sand on the entire island.
Parking: Free street parking is available along Palm Boulevard and select side streets. Spots are limited but turnover is steady since this area draws fewer visitors than Front Beach. Always park with all four wheels off the road and watch for "No Parking" signs — the city does enforce towing.
Best for: Couples and smaller groups who want a low-key morning without crowds. The Boathouse at Breach Inlet restaurant is a short walk away for a post-beach lunch with sunset views.
Beach Bums tip: We deliver and set up chairs and umbrellas at every access point in this zone. Just select your avenue during checkout and your gear will be waiting by 9:30 AM.
Front Beach is the commercial and social hub of Isle of Palms. Running roughly from 10th Avenue to the area around the Grand Pavilion, this is where you'll find the highest concentration of restaurants, bars, shops, and beachgoers. If you're visiting IOP for the first time, this is probably where you'll end up — and for good reason.
The County Park is the most amenity-rich access point on the island. Operated by the Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission (CCPRC), it offers a large paid parking lot, public restrooms, outdoor showers, dressing areas, a playground, sand volleyball courts, picnic areas with grills, and a seasonal snack bar. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months. The park also rents beach chairs, umbrellas, and boogie boards on-site.
Parking: Paid lot with rates that vary by season and day of the week (higher on weekends and holidays). During peak summer, this lot often fills by 10:30 AM, so arrive early.
Important note: Beach Bums does not set up behind the County Park due to park regulations. If you're staying in this area, choose a nearby avenue access instead and we'll get your gear set up there.
The stretch near Coconut Joe's is one of the busiest on the island. Public restrooms and outdoor showers are located near the restaurant, and metered parking is available along Ocean Boulevard. The Windjammer, Papi's Taqueria, and several other restaurants and bars are within easy walking distance, making this area perfect if you want to split your day between the beach and a meal without moving your car.
Grand Pavilion Drive offers additional paid lot parking and is one of the most popular entry points for day visitors. It's well-signed and close to the Front Beach restaurants. Be aware that this area gets extremely crowded on summer weekends and holidays.
Important note: Beach Bums does not set up at the Grand Pavilion (Wild Dunes). If Wild Dunes is your destination, please contact us directly and we can discuss alternatives.
This stretch is the sweet spot for most visitors and the area where Beach Bums sees the highest volume of daily setups. The mid-island avenues offer a great balance: uncrowded sand, free street parking along Palm Boulevard, and easy beach path access — without the noise and congestion of Front Beach.
Parking: Free parking is available in designated public road right-of-way areas along Palm Boulevard from 21st to 57th Avenue. No meters, no lots — just pull over, park legally, and walk to the sand. Enforcement runs from March 1 through October 31 (8 AM – 8 PM), so make sure you're in a marked legal spot.
Beach Bums tip: If you're not sure which mid-island access to choose, 28th Avenue is our go-to recommendation for families. The nearby Rec Center gives you a backup plan if the kids need a playground break, and parking is almost always available. Ready to lock in your spot? Reserve your beach setup online — it takes under 2 minutes.
The upper avenues are where Isle of Palms starts to feel truly secluded. Beach crowds thin out significantly past 40th Avenue, and by the time you reach the 50s, you might have an entire section of shoreline to yourself on a weekday morning. These access points are ideal for long beach walks, shelling, and anyone who prefers privacy over convenience.
Parking: Still free along Palm Boulevard, but spots become more limited the further northeast you go. Some streets have restricted parking on one side. Accessible parking is available at 42nd Avenue.
Amenities: None. No restrooms, showers, or nearby restaurants. Bring everything you need, including plenty of water.
Best for: Experienced beachgoers, couples, runners, and anyone who values quiet over convenience. This is also a great zone for morning fishing.
The northeastern tip of Isle of Palms is home to the Wild Dunes Resort, a gated community that includes several condo and villa complexes: Boardwalk Inn, Fairway Dunes, Shipwatch, Port O'Call, Beach Club Villas, and Mariners Walk. Access to the beach in this area is primarily through the resort itself, and public access is extremely limited.
If you're staying at a Wild Dunes property, your rental or hotel will provide beach access instructions. Some complexes have private boardwalks directly to the sand. Note that the beach at the far northeast tip shifts seasonally due to tidal erosion — the shoreline can look very different from month to month.
Important note: Beach Bums does not set up at the Grand Pavilion (Wild Dunes). If you're staying at a Wild Dunes property and would like a setup, give us a call at 843‑754‑0102 and we'll work out the best option for your specific location.
